Vice President Gibran Visits BMPP Nusantara I Ambon: Expanding Energy Access to Remote Communities
Ambon, October 14, 2025 — The Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, conducted a working visit to PLTMG BMPP (Barge Mounted Power Plant) Nusantara I, a floating power plant operated by PLN Indonesia Power. This facility serves as the backbone of the electricity system in Ambon Island and its surrounding areas. The visit marked a significant moment in reaffirming the government’s commitment to equitable energy access across Indonesia’s frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped regions (3T).
The Vice President was welcomed by the Director of Generation Management of PLN and the Director of Gas Power Plant Operations of PLN Indonesia Power. During the visit, he received a detailed briefing on the strategic role of BMPP Nusantara I in supporting Ambon’s current electricity system.
BMPP Nusantara I has a capacity of 58 MW, generated by six engine units. It is further supported by Ambon Peaker 1, which contributes an additional 39 MW from four engine units. In total, Ambon Island’s power system has an installed capacity of 100 MW, with a peak load of 65 MW during the evening. This leaves a reserve margin of 34 MW, ensuring a reliable electricity supply for the people of Ambon.
To further strengthen the regional power system, PLN is currently constructing PLTMG Ambon Peaker 2, a 50 MW facility scheduled for completion in June 2026.
The Vice President’s visit to PLTMG BMPP Nusantara I not only symbolizes the government’s support for energy infrastructure development in Eastern Indonesia but also serves as a platform for dialogue between stakeholders and the central government.
During the visit, Vice President Gibran and PLN leadership delivered key statements highlighting the strategic role of BMPP Nusantara I in promoting equitable electricity access and regional development.
“Thank you to PLN for your dedication and hard work in providing excellent service to the people of Maluku, especially in Ambon. The community is now enjoying reliable electricity. However, I hope that by 2026, remote and outermost areas currently receiving electricity for only 6 or 12 hours a day will have access to 24-hour electricity. Equal access to electricity will accelerate rural economic growth and improve quality of life,” said Vice President Gibran.
This aligns with the Government’s Asta Cita vision, particularly the fourth goal: Strengthening public services and ensuring equitable development, where energy access is a fundamental pillar for regional progress.
Rizal Calvary Marimbo, Director of Generation Management at PLN, emphasized BMPP Nusantara I as a strategic innovation to reach island regions that are difficult to serve with conventional power plants.
“BMPP Nusantara I is a tangible innovation by PLN, offering a flexible and rapidly deployable power solution, especially for island regions. It not only ensures system reliability but also serves as a strategic solution for national energy equity,” he stated.
Purnomo, Director of Gas Power Plant Operations at PLN IP, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to operating gas power plants efficiently and sustainably to deliver direct benefits to communities.
“We remain committed to optimizing the operation of gas power plants, including BMPP Nusantara I, to deliver real impact to the people. Efficiency, reliability, and sustainability are our core principles in supporting the power system in Eastern Indonesia,” he explained.
The presence of BMPP Nusantara I in Ambon is a testament that energy transformation is not limited to major cities—it also reaches the 3T regions. This power plant is more than just infrastructure; it is a driver of life and development, directly felt by the people of Maluku.
